Washington, D.C. — Maggie’s List, a federal political action committee (PAC) dedicated to electing fiscally conservative women to federal office and statewide executive office, congratulates Winsome Sears on a victorious election for Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor.
On Tuesday, Winsome made history by being the Commonwealth's first female lieutenant governor, and the first woman of color to hold a statewide office. Winsome fought a tough race against Democratic opponent Hala Ayala. Sears was first endorsed by Maggie’s List in June 2021.
“I am proud to congratulate Winsome Sears on her election to Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Maggie’s List Virginia Co-Chair Tina Ramirez. “Winsome’s message of fiscal responsibility, empowering families to choose the education best for their children and individual liberty clearly resonated with voters and we are thrilled for her to become the first female lieutenant governor in Virginia’s history. Her wealth of experience in the public and private sectors has prepared her well to assume office and we look forward to her forthcoming accomplishments as lieutenant governor.”
Previously, Winsome was elected to a majority Black legislative district, an achievement that no other Republican has accomplished in Virginia since 1865. She consequently also became the first (and still only) Black Republican woman elected to the Virginia House, the first female veteran, and the first legal immigrant woman.
Winsome is a mother, wife and is proud to have served in the United States Marines. She was also a hard-charging Vice President of the Virginia State Board of Education and received presidential appointments to the US Census Bureau (where she co-chaired the African American Committee) and the Advisory Committee on Women Veterans to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Maggie’s List empowers conservative women candidates with political credibility and national notoriety. Maggie’s List has an established reputation for backing promising candidates with a mix of maximum financial contributions, an established national network and rapid response grassroots efforts.
